If you are looking to buy a gift for someone and you have no idea what to get them, why not go for a novelty alarm clock? Not only are they fun, they are also very practical.

A novelty alarm clock can also help parents get their children into a routine. For example, my little boy is a little monkey for getting out of bed at ‘silly o’clock’ in the morning and either waking us up or causing havoc with the rest of the house.

But since we bought him his ‘special’ alarm clock, he stays in bed until it goes off. Genius! This wonderful instrument is a ‘flying alarm clock’. Basically when the alarm goes off (7 am in our little boys case), it starts blaring an alarm similar to a submarine S.O.S. signal from old-school naval movies.

But the magic starts a few moments later when a propeller starts whirling around and eventually shoots up into the air. Here’s the really fun part; the only way you can shut it off is to retrieve the propeller and put it back on the clock.

Now because our boy enjoys this alarm so much, he is now sleeping right up to the alarm waking him up, rather than an hour or so before hand. I’m sure he’ll get bored of it after a while but by then he will have got into a nice sleeping pattern of waking up at 7.00am rather than 5.00am!

There are plenty of online retailers stocking this little gem and it shouldn’t set you back more than 30 bucks. Well worth the investment in my opinion.

A favorite at the moment is the ‘Clocky’. This one might just be the worst one of all, because if you ignore it, it jumps off your bedside table onto its large wheels and runs around your room until it finds a place to hide from you. It never rolls to the same spot twice. All while sounding its early morning alarm! You get one chance to hit the snooze button, after that it’s game on! By the time you’ve located Clocky, you’ll be wide awake.

It comes in a variety of colors to match any room décor, such as almond, aqua, red, mustard, cocoa and more recently, modern looking chrome. This amazing clock started as a university class project.
